From September 16th to November 10th, 127 of Shoreline CrossFit’s members participated in the Lurong Paleo Challenge. We saw some MAJOR changes in the vast majority of these individuals. A few weeks ago, we posted where we stood as a gym (and we couldn’t be prouder), and also announced athletes who earned an A average throughout this challenge. We know that you have been eagerly awaiting the announcement of the SCF winners….Well, the wait is OVER!
The female winner for the Shoreline CrossFit Lurong Paleo Challenge is Lynn DeMusis-Grady.
The male winner for the Shoreline CrossFit Lurong Paleo Challenge is Steve Signore.
Do you want to know what’s impressive about these two winners??!! Both work full-time in the restaurant business. Lynn owns Lyynn’s Deli on Rt. 1 in Branford and Steve is the General Manager at Chuck’s Margarita’s, also located on Rt. 1 in Branford. Why is this especially impressive? These individuals are surrounded by food all day, every day. They have plenty of opportunities to cheat while at work, but both of these individuals maintained a solid A average throughout the Challenge (Lynn never cheated, and Steve cheated once). It’s no wonder that they had the results that they did!
To begin, let’s discuss Steve. Steve lost lost 19 1/2 inches total. and 23 lbs! Here’s what he has to say regarding the challenge:
Before the official Lurong Living Paleo Challenge, I told myself I wasn’t going to join, but was, at least, going to attempt to do the challenge on my own. Hours before the Challenge registration closed, I ran into Dave, who motivated me to officially join. Knowing that I had promised victory in the aleo Challenge two years earlier (bad idea!), yet failed to complete even two weeks of the challenge, I had a lot to rove, especially to myself,
I learned from my mistakes the first time around. This time, I prepared foods for the week instead of going meal by meal. This made a huge difference. During the competition, I had a cheat during a camping trip that I didn’t properly prepare for, but that was it. The cheat wasn’t even worth it. I Got back on track and finished 23 pounds less than I did at the start. I weigh less than I have in almost 10 years…. My wife, Kristine, supported me the whole way through by also eating Paleo. She lost a dozen pounds during the challenge as well!
Following a Paleo lifestyle was more than just eating clean. It also improved my eating habits in general. I wasn’t mindlessly picking at junk, or eating large portions right before I go to bed. I lost my ‘all or nothing’ mentality. In the past, one bad meal would lead to a three or four day downward spiral….Now the cravings for almost everything unhealthy are gone. It’s almost like I was reprogrammed at the end of this.
The energy levels I have are now through the roof. Even during the workouts at SCF, I’ve noticed a huge difference. Before this challenge I struggled to do a single unassisted pull-up, but now I can do as many as I need to during a workout. It feels like every aspect of my gym performance has improved, and its all diet related.
I’d suggest to anyone who is considering partaking in this challenge in the future, to do so. Sure, it’s eight weeks. Yeah, it sucks at first. But by the end of it, if you do everything right, it will change your life!!!
Next up, is Lynn… Lynn lost a total of 22 lbs during the Challenge, and seriously looks like a million bucks! Here’s what she has to say about the Challenge:
My decision to do the Lurong challenge was a turning point in my life. The timing couldn’t of been more perfect for me. I knew that I needed to change, and it started the day of the challenge. I decided to just do it, and my motto along the way was “cheating is NOT an option”. I took it one day at a time pushed myself in my workouts and made a commitment to workout no matter where I was. I even went to another box, Treasure Coast Crossfit, when I was in Florida, which was an amazing experience for me. It was great to meet others that were also involved in the Challenge, and to compare stories and swap recipes along the way.
I am eternally grateful that the challenge introduced me to a whole new world of eating: PALEO! I never imagined that I could make such amazing recipes that tasted so delicious and lose weight along the way too! Having my own restaurant was always such a challenge for me when trying to eat right. I was never able to make time to plan my meals. Since The Challenge, I have learned to eat clean and I have never felt better.
I contribute my success to the support of my family, friends and, of course, my coach, Rachel. When I had my doubts about a workout, she would give me that look and simply say….you can do it! I am proud to say that since the Challenge, I have lost 22lbs and 13 3/4 inches. I love when someone asks me about “my secret” and how I did it. The answer is always the same…..Shoreline CrossFit!! Thanks DP–it changed my life and so did you!
