A BRIEF HISTORY
CrossFit was founded by former high-school gymnast Greg Glassman and his wife Lauren. The first CrossFit affiliated gym opened in Santa Cruz in 1995, the same year Glassman was hired to train the Santa Cruz police department.
During this process, Greg decided to take his show on the road. In 2005, there were 18 affiliate gyms in California. In 2010, there were 1,700 affiliate gyms worldwide. Since then, there are nearly 3,000 gyms all over the world. Recently, CrossFit and Reebok formed a corporate relation and their plan is to make CrossFit not only a brand but take CrossFit mainstream.
WHAT IS CROSSFIT:
CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies, sports teams, all military branches, and professional athletes worldwide. It’s also being implemented in nursing homes, pre-schools, and rehabilitation centers. CrossFit is a program that’s all inclusive and adaptable to anyone despite their fitness levels.
CrossFit combines weightlifting, distance running, sprinting, gymnastics, powerlifting, plyometrics, rowing, medicine ball training, and much more. CrossFit’s goals are to improve everyone in each of ten general physical skills: cardiovascular endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination, and accuracy. CrossFit defines fitness as increased work capacity across all these domains and says its program achieves this by provoking neurologic and hormonal adaptations across all metabolic pathways.
CrossFitters run, row, jump rope, climb rope and carry odd objects. They frequently move large and heavy loads quickly over short distances, and sometimes uses powerlifting and olympic weightlifting techniques. CrossFitters also use dumbbells, kettlebells, gymnastics rings, pull-up bars, and many bodyweight exercises to prepare everyone for the expected and sometimes unexpected.
