Happy New Year SCF Fam!
It's the first Monday of 2022, so here's a Fitness Tip if you plan to set this year's resolution with a health and fitness goal.
Consistency Will Always Trump Intensity...
You have our permission to dog your workouts.
You have our permission to scale or modify the workouts.
You have our permission to come 1,2 or even 3 days a week.
You're allowed to skip a workout and go for a walk instead.
You have our permission to smile during your workouts.
You get the idea...
We say this with the philosophy in mind, that consistency will always trump intensity when you're starting a routine.
Here's what we see around this time of year...
Joe is a fitness enthusiast that lost his way over the last few years.
Joe is excited to start back up and plans to come 5 days a week.
Joe goes hard each session leaving nothing on the table.
Two to three months later, Joe is fatigued, burnt out, maybe even injured, and can only muster up enough energy to come 2-3 days a week.
Eventually, Joe quits all together or is frustrated with his progress.
The moral of this story is don't be like Joe. Start off easy and give yourself the time to get into a groove.
The easier and more enjoyable you can make your fitness experience, the more likely you are to stick to it over the long run.
This does not mean you won’t make any progress. You can still set and achieve lofty goals, but the gains are very gradual and incremental. Your progress tends to compound and accelerate over time.
So as you get back into a routine and realistic goals to start, try to enjoy the process. Although a bit slower, focus on being consistent first, and eventually the intensity and results will follow.
We hope this helps! Happy New Year and we're here if you need us!
